EDGE Tutor International, a Southeast Asian online tutoring outsourcing company, has announced a $1 million Pre-Series A funding round. This follows an $800,000 seed round in 2023.
The Pre-Series A round was led by Seaborne Capital, M Venture Partners, Kaya Founders, and Orvel Ventures, with participation from IdeaSpace, Lorinet Foundation, and angel investors. The funding will be used to expand EDGE Tutor’s operations into North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East. The company currently has offices in New York, London, Singapore, and Manila.
EDGE Tutor operates a B2B model, providing tutoring companies with Filipino educators and management services. The company states it accepts approximately 3% of teacher applicants.
“Henry and his team have demonstrated fortitude and excellent operational capability in a tough environment. At M Venture Partners, we believe in supporting exceptional founders like Henry, who are solving one of life’s most meaningful missions – training teachers,” said Tony Yeoh of MVP.
While acknowledging the role of artificial intelligence in education, EDGE Tutor focuses on providing affordable, human-centered learning experiences.
“There’s nothing artificial about the passion and dedication of our 1,000+ tutors. We see it every day in the way they connect with students and make learning come alive. Our 50 clients across 30 countries are experiencing firsthand that live instruction isn’t just valuable—it’s in demand. AI makes for a great co-pilot and a powerful supplement between live sessions, but we (along with our clients and their learners) find that nothing replaces the power of human connection,” said Henry Motte de la Motte, CEO & Founder of EDGE Tutor.
De la Motte’s leadership in education has been recognized through his selection as an Asia Society Young Leader (2015), a WEF Young Global Leader (2020), and inclusion in the Founders Forum 40 to Watch for EdTech (2023).

“Teaching is no exception to the globally recognized thriving services industry in the Philippines. Driven by ‘malasakit’, a Filipino value with no direct English translation, which embodies deep care and compassion—qualities that no technology can replace. This spirit perfectly defines the teachers at EDGE Tutor, whose dedication goes beyond instruction – they are passionate about their learners’ success and an unparalleled commitment to service excellence ensuring a global impact.” said Paulo Campos, Founding Managing General Partner of Kaya Founders.
EDGE Tutor aims to increase its tutor capacity from 1,000 to 5,000 by 2026. The company also plans to invest in AI-driven automation for various processes, including teacher training and curriculum development.
“We have been an active part of the high-growth BPO industry in the Philippines for the last 15 years and are convinced that the education and tutoring vertical is ready to leverage outsourcing to enhance learner outcomes, improve support for onshore teachers, and ensure tutoring becomes increasingly affordable,” said Jay Haendler of Seaborne Capital.
The global tutoring market, valued at approximately $200 billion, remains predominantly offline, with only 20% of tutoring currently conducted online. The online segment, however, is experiencing rapid growth at 15% per year, presenting a significant opportunity for online tutoring providers.
EDGE Tutor reports having delivered 800,000 lessons since 2023 and anticipates surpassing 1 million in early 2025. The company also reports a student satisfaction score of 4.96/5 and a 2-3x increase in tutors’ disposable income.
“Every learner deserves a great teacher, and some of the best are right here in the Philippines,” said Cecilia Calvo Lewis, COO of EDGE Tutor. “This investment allows us to expand global access to our world-class Filipino tutors while providing them with training, technology, and coaching to excel in online teaching.”
