SYNOPSIS

In the startup world, growth strategies vary by business.  There are those that take the slow and sustainable growth route by investing as they profit.  The second, more innovative approach is to scale up the business as quickly as possible, and then find a way to profit from it at a later date; and in doing so, raise the value of the company even before it reaches profitability.

The latter approach has become the dominant business model in Silicon Valley for the past two decades.  Reid Hoffman, founder of LinkedIn, coined this aggressive growth strategy as “Blitzscaling.” Blitzscaling strategies are more common in businesses whose success depends on acquiring a large user base to increase usage and overall value of the product or service, enabling them to monopolize the market in a winner take all scenario.

Blitzscaling requires significant funding to scale, outspend competition and achieve rapid growth at the expense of short-term losses with the hopes of stability later on. History has shown that it has proven to be successful with some (Amazon, PayPal, LinkedIn, AirBnb) and not so well for others (Uber, WeWork, MoviePass).

Every startup wants to grow and turn a profit as quickly as possible, but what is the right strategy to achieve this?  In this event, we aim to tackle the burning questions around this topic with the hopes of equipping early-stage founders and investors with the tools to help their companies grow efficiently.
